Laser & IPL Safety: Core of Knowledge – Level 4

The ‘Core of Knowledge’ Laser & IPL User course is a Level 4 ‘foundation’ course that is the vital first step to complete before attempting to work with laser and intense pulsed light (IPL) radiation. It will describe the key features of laser IPL radiation, the electromagnetic spectrum, key technical terms, major tissue chromophores, tissue interaction with light, the suitability of different wavelengths for skin treatments and will also cover hazards and risks and safety policies and procedures.

Introducing the Online Laser Training distance-learning course as a ‘Core of Knowledge’ (CoK) training module to provide you with a fundamental understanding of laser and ILS light technology, how light interacts with skin to produce specific biological effects and how to use laser and intense pulsed light (IPL) safely.

It is a legal obligation in some UK jurisdictions, some states of Australia, and most states in the U.S. that a ‘Core of Knowledge’ course from a recognised or approved trainer is provided as a requirement of registration and/or licencing. In most countries, laser/IPL operators must demonstrate competence in the form of recognised training in order to obtain liability insurance.

The courses consist of four units of learning; each contain course notes, a video presentation and a multiple choice assessment. A transcript of each presentation is also available for hearing impaired learners or for off-line study.

The learning outcome is an independently accredited, nationally recognised, Level 3 or 4 Award to the named student. This online course is worth 3 CEU learning credits (which is equivalent to a notional 30 hours of learning). Typically, the course takes 2 days to complete.

Introducing the new ‘must have’ course for beginners in laser or intense pulsed light (IPL) hair reduction who have already completed ‘Core of Knowledge’ certificated training in laser safety. It includes relevant skin and hair anatomy and physiology. The course is broken down into three units of learning followed by multiple-choice questions which you must complete before moving on to the next section. A training video supported by a detailed workbook is provided to assist the learner.

Laser Protection Supervisor / LSO ‘Core of Knowledge’ – Level 4 & 5

The ‘Core of Knowledge’ Laser Safety Officer course is for an advanced learner seeking Level 4 & 5 certification (depending on country) in radiation safety and will be typically the Laser Safety Supervisor / Laser Safety Officer (LSO) appointed to manage overall safety of equipment, users and other persons present in the Laser Controlled Area where lasers and intense light devices are installed to provide professional treatments to clients or patients.

This more advanced course is intended for experienced laser / IPL operators who are responsible for supervision of all light-based devices in the establishment. The entire Level 4 & 5 modules are divided into the same 4 units as the Level 4 course with strengthened Assessment Criteria and Assessment Evidence.

It is a legal obligation in some UK jurisdictions (e.g. Wales & N.I.) and in some states of Australia, that a Laser Protection Supervisor (LPS) / Laser Safety officer (LSO) is appointed. This role involves application of knowledge in a broad range of professional and technical work activities with a substantial degree of personal responsibility and working autonomy. Responsibility for the work of others and the allocation of resources is often present.

A deeper understanding of the content of the Laser User Core of Knowledge training video and workbooks is required to answer the more challenging multiple-choice assessments at the end of each section. Additional downloadable workbook material is also provided to assist you with independent study and critical assessment of laser safety requirements in your establishment.

You will be required to provide evidence of completion of a recognised Core of Knowledge / Laser User course (either completion of the OLT Laser User course or a scanned copy of a recognized Core of Knowledge / Laser User course completed within the preceding 3 years. In addition, you will submit a developed set of Local Rules or Working Rules / Radiation Protection Plan (in AUS/NZ) for the specific device(s) used in the learner’s establishment, complete a choice of 4 independent written tasks from 11 possible tasks and a randomly selected written Assignment by OLT.

The learning outcome is an independently accredited, nationally recognized, Level 4 or 5 Award to the named student. This online course is worth 6 CEU learning credits (which is equivalent to a notional 60hrs of learning). Typically, the course is expected to take 1 - 2 weeks to complete depending on the practical experience of the learner.

Light Based Hair Reduction & Skin Rejuvenation – Level 4

This new advanced modular course comprises of three theory and one practical modules, each competitively priced, allowing you to progress steadily through Level 3 and Level 4 knowledge content at your own pace without a burdensome up-front cost. Each of the three theory modules cost £99.00, with the practical component £595.00.
The program provides you with a fundamental understanding of Skin & Hair Anatomy and Physiology, Reactions to Laser and IPL Therapy and Application Theory before progressing on to complete case studies and practical assessment.
All learners successfully completing all three theory modules will receive Level 3 certification from OCN Credit4Learning.
Level 4 certification is only achieved upon completion of all four modules.

This new modular course is for the advanced learner seeking an independent award certificate at Level 4 in Light Based Hair Reduction and Skin Rejuvenation with additional material covering vascular and pigmented skin blemishes.

This accredited Level 4 course requires a deeper understanding of the training videos and workbooks and the successful completion of a series of more challenging multiple-choice assessments than a level 3 course. The learner will be typically a practitioner or therapist already using laser or intense pulsed light equipment wishing to achieve the minimum recommended educational conditions published by national educational bodies or required by public and professional indemnity insurance providers.

The Level 4 candidate in Laser and IPL Hair Reduction and Skin Rejuvenation will therefore have completed ‘Core of Knowledge’ Laser User Level 4 training or have attended a recognised laser safety certificated course as a pre-requisite before taking this advanced course in Laser and IPL Hair Reduction and Skin Rejuvenation.

Several documented case studies must be completed and submitted as evidence of hands-on skills. Online Laser Training provides additional study resources to assist the completion of all these portfolio tasks.

All learners successfully completing all three theory modules will receive Level 3 certification from OCN Credit4Learning. Level 4 certification is only achieved upon completion of all four modules.
