The A-Z of Understanding Pigmentation

Pigmentation is one of the most difficult skin conditions to treat effectively. Unless you understand the physiology, biology and morphology of how pigment is created and how and why things can go wrong, we have no real chance of effective treatments. This course is a must-do for anyone wanting to understand pigmentation completely. Tell me more...

This six unit course covers the A-Z of the factors that make treating the various forms of pigmentation such a challenge.
This medley of topics will answer those questions that come to mind when struggling to understand the microbiology of the pigment-forming cell (the melanocyte) and the formation of the pigment granule (melanogenesis).
Subjects covered over six units of learning:

■ Skin Colours/Photo types and potential risk for pigmentation
■ Cellular damage of the melanocyte and pigmentation
■ Melanocyte lifecycle
■ Cause and effect of pigmentation

Chemistry of treating Pigmentation

Pigmentation can be a challenging condition to treat. Often, treatments fail to deliver the level of results expected, and this is largely due to there not being one simple solution; especially when considering non-light based (IPL and Laser) modalities. The objective of this class is to understand how a skin care formulation can be linked to skin structure and function of the skin; in this case the melanogenesis process, and influence cellular processes in order to make a measurable difference to a skin condition such as pigmentation.
This course includes a downloadable PDF copy of the book "Cosmetic Chemistry" by Florence Barrett-Hill.

Pigmentation can be a challenging condition to treat largely due to there being not one simple solution. There are a number of what is termed "intervention points" along the path of pigment formation, and each requires a specific type of chemical to reduce or halt the formation of pigment. Because there is no one chemical that can interfere with the melanogenesis process 100%, there must be a minimum of four, or best case scenario five chemical "interventions" required to have maximum success.

Topics covered in this course include:
• Review of the melanogenesis process
• The five intervention points in melenogenesis
• Preparatory steps
• Delivery susyems
• MSH Inhibitors & antagonists
• Tyrosinase inhibitors
• Pigment granule inhibitors
• Melanosome transfer inhibitors
• Cellular defense systems
Total presentation time (excluding assessments): 47 minutes.

Typical completion time (including prior reading): 1 hour, 30 minutes.
